Visit to Tripura
Almost every family in rural Tripura has a tradition of crafts. Women weaves their own fabrics while the men fashion a thousand artifacts, both utility and decorative items, out of bamboo strips and cane – baskets in fancy shapes, flower holders, table mats, trays, wall hangings, even delicate earrings and hair ornaments.
Pottery is another local craft. Painted in bright colors, they make aesthetic accessories. Although bamboo craft is common to Assam and other regions of north – east, especiality of Tripura is the root carvings, exquisite and not to be missed if you want souvenirs to carry back.
Not many people know that Tripura, too, has tea – estate like Assam. The Jampui hills, described as the “permanent seat of spring”, provide very scenic and panoramic views from an altitude of 100mt above sea level. With mist and cloud masses floating below eye level the mountain ranges, you can look right across into Mizoram’s valleys.
There is hiking and boating for diversion and during November an orange festival is held. The orange orchards are in bloom at that time.
During July, Tripura celebrates Kharchi festival for seven days. Having begun 680 years ago, this festival is said to highlight unity between tribals and non tribals. At other festivals like Durga Pooja, Garya Pooja and Ashok Ashtami, the tribals dance which are visually very fascinating.
