Why Volunteer?
by Karen Lovett

For some, volunteering is such a way of life that they can not just sit idly by while something needs done. They take the bull or project by the horns and get it to where it should be. These people are just natural born leaders.

Under different circumstances, they may have been CEO of a Fortune 500 corporation. Instead, they have chosen to use their natural talent for an even better purpose. They volunteer.

Now, don’t get all scared on me. Volunteering isn’t that scary. Anyone can volunteer. It is just a wonderful way of expressing your care and concern and learn something new at the same time. It doesn’t have to be expensive or time consuming. The benefits you get in return are no comparison to the small investment you make.

It can be something as simple as reading to a group of children, or visiting shut-ins or those in nursing homes. This type of volunteering can be a blessing to you as well as them. These will bring you into contact with people that you may not of otherwise known. You get the honor of being a part of their lives in a way that will make a true difference. Watch their eyes, you will see them trying very hard to tell you how much they appreciate your help.

They don’t require a lot of time, energy, or even money. Just a little care and concern. The love you get in return is really immeasurable. Take a look into the kids eyes as they see that you are really paying attention to them.

The shut-ins and nursing home residents get really lonely. To them a visitor is a very welcome treat. If you can, take the time to talk to them about their life. Everyone has a story. You just have to be willing to find it.

Take a good look into the eyes and hearts of the people you volunteer to help. Thanks to your help, they feel important. They feel that you think they matter. And can’t we all use a little reminder of that every now and then. Besides, one day, you or your loved ones may be in their shoes. Wouldn’t you want to know that a kind person like yourself took time to spend with them to make their day special?
